Just in time for Summer, I’ve collected a few of my favorite overseas venues, whether for weddings, family reunions, meetings, or just to get away.
Cliveden House & Spa, Berkshire, England
Elegance abounds at this property, once the home of the Viscountess Nancy Astor, who entertained the likes of Charlie Chaplin, George Bernard Shaw, and Winston Churchill.
Just 20 minutes from London Heathrow airport, Cliveden rests on 376 acres of National Trust grounds and parkland—plenty of space for a long walk and views of the river. The property includes all the amenities needed for private parties and meetings, plus it boasts a fantastic indoor and heated outdoor pool. The service is impeccable, and the food by Chef André Garrett is fantastic. Don’t miss out on high tea or lunch at the memorable Astor Grill in what was once Lord Astor’s stables. http://www.clivedenhouse.co.uk
Eden Roc, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Large and beautifully appointed rooms – more like casitas – with private plunge pool and your own golf cart to zip around the property or hit the nearby Punta Espada Golf Course. Excellent food at the chic Mediterraneo Restaurant or the beach-side La Palapa restaurant and professional and friendly service. This is a great getaway for a destination wedding or event. https://www.edenroccapcana.com/
The Metropole, Venice, Italy
There is so much to love about the Metropole. Once an orphanage where Antonio Vivaldi gave music lessons, this 5-star boutique hotel with 67 rooms weaves history, elegance, and the exotic into magic. It is located just minutes from St. Mark’s Square and includes a private Canal entrance for arrivals and departures via water taxi. Its décor is a fairytale of golds, teals, reds – sumptuous and delicious. The conference room can accommodate 80 guests, and its Michelin Star rated restaurant, The Met, is sure to delight. Libations at the Oriental Bar are a must. http://www.hotelmetropole.com
Tanjung Rhu Resort, Pulau Langkawi, Malaysia
Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah, is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. Tanjung Rhu Resort has 2.5 km of perfectly white, sandy beach overlooking the stunning Andaman Sea and islets – it is the stuff of postcards. This 5-star tropical paradise includes spacious and airy rooms designed with hardwood floors and accented with Thai silk fabrics. The whole property is imbued with a sense of tranquility and peace. The spa takes wellness and relaxation to another level with Thai, Malay, Ayurvedic, and Indonesian (Balinese) treatments. Service is professional and friendly, while the food is the best in Malaysian and European fare. The Pavilion Meeting Room includes state of the art audio and visual capabilities and accommodates up to 100 guests, and there are plenty of gathering spots such as the Gardens, the Lagoon Pool or the Rhu Deck with sea views. http://www.tanjungrhu.com.my
Quinta das Lágrimas, Coimbra, Portugal
If you are looking for a venue with character and a sense of identity, then look no further than Quinta das Lágrimas, family owned since 1730, and located in the charming town of Coimbra. Once a palace for Portuguese kings, it boasts a fantastic legend of forbidden love, murder, death, royal corpses and ghosts–all very romantic in a Tim-Burton-Corpse-Bride sort of way. The resort includes 29.6 acres of exquisite botanical gardens and a 5-star luxury hotel, plus spa. The restaurant is excellent whether dining inside or al fresco. Meeting space is available for groups of 40 to 200 guests, depending on set up.http://www.quintadaslagrimas.pt/quinta-das-lagrimas
